A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is a blood test that measures the three main types of cells in your blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It is the most frequently ordered blood test in medicine and is used to screen for a wide range of conditions.
You'll find a CBC ordered as part of a routine annual checkup, before a surgery, when a doctor is investigating fatigue, or when monitoring an ongoing condition. It's quick, inexpensive, and gives doctors a comprehensive snapshot of your overall health.

Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to every cell in your body and return carbon dioxide for you to breathe out. The CBC measures several aspects of your red blood cells.
The total number of red blood cells per microliter of blood. Low counts often suggest anemia; high counts can indicate dehydration or certain conditions affecting bone marrow.
Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen. This is the primary marker for detecting anemia. Low hemoglobin is the most common cause of fatigue and shortness of breath.
The percentage of your blood volume made up of red blood cells. It closely mirrors hemoglobin and is used together with it to assess anemia severity.
The average size of your red blood cells. Low MCV (small cells) is often caused by iron deficiency. High MCV (large cells) can be caused by vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
White blood cells are the cells of your immune system — they defend your body against infections and foreign substances. The CBC measures the total count and the breakdown of different types.
The total number of immune cells. A high WBC often signals an active infection, inflammation, or immune response. A low WBC can mean the immune system is suppressed.
The most common white blood cell. Neutrophils are the first responders to bacterial infections. A high neutrophil count strongly suggests a bacterial infection.
Lymphocytes fight viral infections and are the backbone of your immune memory (including vaccine responses). A high lymphocyte count is common with viral illnesses.
Platelets are tiny cell fragments that rush to the site of a wound and clump together to stop bleeding. Too few platelets (thrombocytopenia) increases bleeding risk. Too many (thrombocytosis) can raise clotting risk.
Most lab reports mark results outside the reference range with an H (high) or L (low) flag. Here's how to think about them:
💡 A single flag does not automatically mean something is wrong. Reference ranges represent the middle 95% of healthy people — meaning 1 in 20 healthy people will have a result outside the range simply by chance. Context — your symptoms, history, and other results — is everything.
⚠️ When to contact your doctor promptly: If your WBC is very high (>30 K/µL) or very low (<2.5 K/µL), or your hemoglobin is below 8 g/dL, or platelets are below 50,000 — contact your doctor the same day, even if you feel fine.
